Herbal First Aid at Summer Festivals

This summer, I joined a dedicated team of herbalists and first aiders at Buddahfield festival in Somerset and Small World Festival in Kent. Experiences that continue to inspire and affirm my commitment to community-based herbal care.

We were led by the remarkable Dedj, who trained as a herbalist over 30 years ago and later qualified as a paramedic. Our team of 17 offered both orthodox first aid and herbal support to festival-goers. Dedj, with over 28 years of experience and her leadership brings a depth of experience and calm that anchors the whole operation.

Together, we treated a wide range of injuries and ailments, from wasp and bee stings to sprains, burns, cuts and even fractured bones. We dress wounds, strap joints and offer practical, compassionate care in a fast-paced environment. The integration of herbal medicine brings nature’s pharmacy to those in need.

Lavender is one of our go-to remedies for burns, offering both pain relief and skin healing. Myrrh is invaluable for deep wounds, thanks to its antimicrobial and regenerative properties. To support recovery, reduce inflammation and ease discomfort we also use teas, tinctures, poultices and essential oils

For many, this is more than first aid—it’s an opportunity to access holistic healthcare they might not otherwise encounter. The setting may be unconventional, but the care is intentional. People come to us not just for physical relief, but for reassurance, connection and the healing presence of plants.

Working alongside like-minded herbalists feels like being part of a big, supportive family. We share knowledge, stories, food, laughter and a deep respect for the power of herbal medicine. I feel incredibly grateful to be part of this community and to contribute to a model of care that is both practical and heart-led.

Herbal first aid at festivals is a reminder of what’s possible when we combine skill, compassion, and the wisdom of plants. It’s grassroots medicine at its best and I’m already looking forward to next summer.

Stay healthy and happy, everyone.
